Arthritis and the Risk of Falls with Elderly Adults

Arthritis

Many older adults are plagued by arthritis and chronic joint pain as they age. In fact, many Alert1 members have expressed concern about aging in place while suffering from the debilitating effects of arthritis. Unfortunately, although you can temporarily relieve arthritis pain with aspirin or other pain relievers, there is no official "cure" for arthritis. This is one of many reasons why elderly emergency alert systems are so useful.

Do you suffer from arthritis? Have you noticed any symptoms of impaired mobility? If so, Alert1's fall detection system can help protect you if the unthinkable happens. Our emergency alert pendants or wristbands can help you or your loved ones feel safe as they provide access to a team of professionals from our monitoring center who are standing by to provide fast support and assistance around the clock.

How Arthritis Impacts Aging Adults

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), arthritis is inflammation of the joints caused by the breakdown of cartilage. This cartilage is what protects bones from rubbing against one another. The slow joint degradation may impact mobility, which would increase the likelihood of a fall, making an emergency alert wristband or pendant a prudent idea.

·                     There are a number of different forms of arthritis. The three common forms are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage parts of the body.

·                     The most common symptoms of arthritis are joint pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced mobility - all of which could increase the risk of falling. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that one in three older adults over 65 will fall each year. That risk increases for older adults who are living with arthritis.

·                     The risk of falling is 2.4 times more likely for people who have arthritis, according to Arthritis ACT, a non-profit awareness group in Australia. This is due to poor balance, increased pain levels and a loss of strength.

Fall Risks and Prevention Tips for Arthritis Sufferers

We have resources available to help reduce the risk of senior falls. One approach is to reduce hazards in the home that could lead to falls. Some risk factors for fall prevention include:

Poor lighting. Be sure to replace lightbulbs or add night lights in high traffic areas around the home. This is especially important for older adults with impaired vision.

Steep stairways. One popular fall prevention method for seniors is to install a chair lift.

Missing handrails. Handrails are extremely helpful for support. Install handrails in the problem areas around the home in order to keep a firm grip and footing.

Improperly labeled medicines. Improper doses of prescribed drugs can lead to potential senior falls or greater health consequences. With our medication dispenser, you can easily track your regularly scheduled medicine regimen.

Clutter. Keeping walkways clear and clutter free is essential in preventing senior falls.

Poorly designed furniture, including unstable or low back chairs. Have you ever sat on a chair with one shorter leg, or a sofa with a worn out back cushion? Unstable furniture only increases fall risk as older adults have skewed depth perceptions.

Wet, waxed or irregular floors. For seniors, slippery floors and hard surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen are especially hazardous. Non-skid mats or mats with slip-resistant backing help combat slick or waxed floors.

All individuals who suffer from arthritis or joint pain should consider using an elderly emergency alert system. These pendant or wristband devices with built-in 2 way speakers allow seniors to access help at the press of a button, 24/7/365.

Alert1 emergency alerts are easy to use. All you need to do is press the help button on the wearable medical alarm pendant to connect with our monitoring center in seconds. Help will arrive while the call center agent remains on the line with you.

An elderly emergency alert system not only helps seniors and others get assistance in the event of an emergency, but it also offers peace of mind.

As more seniors with arthritis age in place, desiring to continue living independently at home for as long as possible, they and their family caregivers will feel secure knowing that an Alert1 medical alarm system provides access to help at any given moment.
